Vicki Wilde: Director, CGIAR Gender & Diversity Program

VickiVicki is the visionary engine behind AWARD, and is known internationally for her expertise in gender and diversity issues in agricultural development. Before joining the CGIAR in 1999, she worked with local communities in Asia and Africa for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, World Food Programme and International Fund for Agricultural Development. She holds a Masters in Environmental Psychology from the City University of New York, and a BA in Social Ecology from the University of California.

 

Margaret Kroma: Fellowship Manager & Science Coordinator
Margaret

Margaret is responsible for day-to-day delivery of the AWARD fellowships. She is also in charge of AWARD’s activities related to boosting science capacities, including advanced research placements. Margaret brings a rich track-record in rural agriculture into her supervisory and guiding role to the AWARD team. She joined us from Cornell University where she was Assistant Professor in Sociology of Agriculture and Extension. She holds a PhD in Rural Sociology from Iowa State University, and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Extension from the University of Sierra Leone and Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg.

 Dorothy Mukhebi: Mentoring Coordinator

DorothyWith 25 years experience working with African agricultural networks, Dorothy is able to identify the best possible mentor for each AWARD fellow, and guiding and tracking their progress. Before joining AWARD, she was Coordinator of the Regional Agricultural Information Network of the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA). Dorothy holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies from Loughborough University of Technology (U.K.), and a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi.

Pauline Bomett: Leadership & Training Coordinator

PaulineBomettPauline uses her excellent organizational skills to coordinate AWARD’s leadership cornerstone and ensure smooth delivery of AWARD’s training courses in mentoring, leadership, and science and proposal writing. She liaises with AWARD’s implementation partners and coordinates our training-of-African-trainers initiative. Pauline is no stranger to AWARD, having served for 8 years as Office Manager of the CGIAR Gender & Diversity Program. Pauline holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Moi University (Kenya), and has attended various courses in human resources and financial management.

Karen Homer: Communications Manager

Karen HomerKaren leads AWARD’s communication strategy, including the development of electronic and print media to inform and engage key audiences. She brings 20 years of international experience, mostly gained in West Africa in a variety of communications roles. She joined AWARD from World Vision (Canada), where she served as Director of Public Relations. Karen holds a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University (Canada) and a Certificate in Public Relations.

 

 James Kakooza: Monitoring & Evaluation Coordinator

James KakoozaJames has the critical responsibility for the design, implementation, and coordination of AWARD’s monitoring and evaluation system. He has over 9 years of international work experience in Program Design and Monitoring & Evaluation. Prior, he was M&E Manager for Mercy Corps International in Afghanistan. James holds A Postgraduate Diploma in Project Planning and Programming from the Uganda Management Institute, and a Masters Degree in Science and Technical Education from Makerere University.

 

Helga Recke: Senior Advisor-Women in Science

HelgaHelga’s valuable experience is of particular benefit in identifying suitable research placements for AWARD Fellows. She joined G&D in 2004, working to secure funding and implement fellowship programs to fast track the careers of African women agricultural scientists. For more than 10 years, she coordinated EU-funded Research Support Programs at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute concentrating on gender-responsive research. Helga holds a PhD in Soil Science and Plant Nutrition from Giessen University, and a MSc in Horticulture from Hannover University.
 
Donald Onyoni: Finance and Contracts Manager

DonaldMore than a decade of Finance experience has equipped Donald for the pivotal responsibility of solid oversight of AWARD’s budget, procurement, and contracts. Prior, he was the Finance and Administration Director at Columbia University International Centre for AIDS Care & Treatment Programme in Kenya. Donald holds a Master’s in International Relations from United States International University-Africa (Kenya), a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Eastern Africa, and certification from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA).

 

Florence Sipalla: Communications Officer

FlorenceFlorence manages the AWARD Web site and blog, as well as communications with the AWARD fellows and media relations. Before joining AWARD, she was a Business Communications tutor at the University of the Witwatersrand, and Communications Officer at the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS). Florence holds a Masters degree in African Literature from the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Language and Literary Studies from Moi University, Kenya.

 

Marion Kihori: Senior Administrative & Travel Coordinator

MarionAWARD’s administration and logistics services are in the capable hands of Marion. Prior to AWARD, she served for 15 years as the Personal Assistant to the Director of Corporate Services at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi, Kenya. Marion holds an advanced diploma in Business Administration from the Association of Business Executives (Kenya) and an advanced diploma in Secretarial Studies from Kenya Polytechnic. She has also completed many short courses in administration and business management.


Sharon Ongadi
: Program Assistant for Monitoring & Evaluation

SharonSharon operates the M&E database, ensuring AWARD has detailed and up-to-date data and information on record for all fellowship applications, fellows, mentors, and partner organizations. The database provides the foundation for AWARD’s extensive Monitoring and Evaluation assessments. Previously, she worked as a Registration Clerk with the Electoral Commission of Kenya, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics from Kenyatta University.

 

 Obadiah Wambua: Administrative Assistant

ObadiahObadiah brings valuable administrative support to Marion and the team. Prior, he worked in a similar position at Health NGOs Network (HENNET), and was a Human Resources Assistant at African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF). Obadiah has a degree in Business Administration (Human Resources) from Kenya Methodist University, and a diploma in Human Resource Management from the Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM-K).
