Women farmers are key to economic growth-ICRW paper

6 01 2009

As the world grapples to find ways forward to reduce growing global poverty and hunger, the international community must invest in women farmers.

That was the message Dec. 9, at a high-profile ICRW panel event featuring Nobel Laureate and Harvard economist Amartya Sen, former Finance Minister of Nigeria, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, ICRW President Geeta Rao Gupta and ICRW senior economist Rekha Mehra. Panelists discussed the newly launched paper, “A Significant Shift: Women, Food Security and Agriculture in a Global Marketplace.”

Earlier that day, the ICRW Leadership Council convened its first meeting to discuss ways to increase awareness on why investing in women and girls is so important to global economic growth.  Leadership Council participants in attendance included Susan Berresford, Jennifer Buffett, Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg, Amartya Sen and Larry Summers.

I find the paper enlightening and I have even passed it on to my colleagues working on gender and women issues in general. I need more of these papers.
